GH Review 2007-Summary of Sonny & Mike Scenes

November 27, 2007

Are Mike and Bobbie a couple?

Mike and Bobbie have shown up at events as a couple before over the years. This week, they came together for Emily's funeral. Sonny was unable to attend the funeral, due to Monica Quartermaine's objection.

Mike's scene about Emily:

Bobbie: Oh, I feel awful for Monica. Losing a child is the hardest thing in the world you'd have to deal with.

Mike: I wouldn't wish that pain on anybody. You know, after Courtney died, I didn't know what I'd do with myself. If it wasn't for the grand kids, I don't think I'd be standing here today.

Sonny's scene about Emily:

Sonny: Emily stood by me in one of the darkest times of my life. I tell you, if it wasn't for her, I wouldn't be here right now. If she didn't make me get treatment, my kids wouldn't have a father, so I owe her my life, and now she's dead because of me, because of what I do.

Mike: I was at Jake's, and two off-duty cops are talking about Leticia being murdered and how some hotshot named Zacchara is targeting your family . . . my family. I go to Carly's and I find out from Milo that my grandsons are on your island, shaken but safe. Why do I have to hear these things from other people?

Sonny: Maybe I thought you were old enough to take care of yourself.

Mike: You know, you can really be an ass sometimes. I didn't come here looking for your protection, Michael. I came because I thought you could use some help.

Sonny: I don't need your help, Mike.

Mike: Listen, you don't always have to do things alone, Michael.

Sonny: I understand.

Mike: Reach out. You might be surprised at what you get back.

Sonny: Listen. I get you're trying to help me. Fine. The situation is very volatile. If I involve the wrong person, there is no telling what the body count's going to be.

Sonny and Mike have a heart to heart talk on Father's Day.

Mike: Do I know that woman?

Sonny: She's my new neighbor.

Mike: Really? Well, she looks very familiar.

Sonny: Yeah, she works for a magazine. What are you doing here?

Mike: Well, Carly stopped by and picked up a whole lot of sides, and she told me about the BBQ. I thought it was a good opportunity to drop this off.

Sonny: You know, you're welcome to join us if you want.

Mike: Look, I'm not fishing for an invitation, so don't worry. Here.

Sonny: What do you got? You make this?

Mike: Barbecue sauce. You know, for all those Father's Day cookouts we missed.

Sonny: Thanks. I mean, it looks great.

Mike: Wow. You know, the kids are going to love this.

Sonny: Carly tell you she's bringing Jax?

Mike: Well, I guess that's how blended families are supposed to work, huh? I don't know.

Sonny: I'd like you to stick around.

Mike: Well, I'd hate to miss the fireworks, but I have plans. You know, I wish we'd done things like this.

Sonny: Well, you're here right now, right?

Mike: Yeah. Better late than never, huh?

Sonny: I finally realized, you know, that life's too short, you got to do what you got to do.

Mike: But even so, this can't be easy for you.

Sonny: If Jax and I get along, then it's easier for the kids.

Mike: Yeah. Well, you know, you are a good father, Michael.

Sonny: Thank you.

Mike: Yeah. Happy Father's Day.

Sonny: Right back at you.

I loved the Sonny and Mike scene! They rarely if ever have a heart to heart talk anymore and this was as close as they get. I just love how Maurice plays Sonny in his scenes with Mike. He becomes that hurt little boy again. I like how he smiled when Mike gave him the BBQ sauce. I wasn't sure why Mike couldn't stay for a Father's Day BBQ, but then it also showed how Mike continues his lifelong neglect of his son. He's always too busy to be with Sonny. It's never changed. That's why I like their scene today. It said so much. And when Mike said Sonny was a good father, to me that validated that Sonny is different than Mike. Sonny would never abandon his kids. Sonny has always been there for his kids, he's always provided guidance, and he will always love them.

Mike: Look, son. I'm a gambler, I know what it is to put hope against hope. I know what it is to put money on the table that I don't even have when all the odds are against me. Now, I always wanted to see you and Carly have a life together and I'm the one that told you not to give her up. But she is out there on her own making her own choices, and after some of the stuff you pulled on her, I'm not sure you're going to win this.

It's always good to see a Sonny and Mike scene, but could do without Mike giving Sonny advice in the romance department.

Sonny: Yeah, come in.

Mike: Hey. How you doing?

Sonny: Damn. You know what? I'm busy right now. Just tell Milo. He'll give you whatever cash you need and we'll figure it out. He'll call the bookie or whatever.

Mike: I didn't come here for money. I know how rough things are with you and Carly, so I thought maybe you'd like to talk, but I mean, why bother when you can pay me off and send me on my way? Hey, I'll save you the cash.

Sonny: Mike, wait a minute.

Mike: Why? So you can tell me for the millionth time how much you don't need my help?

Sonny: That's not what I was . . .

Mike: No, I know the way you think, Sonny. You still look at me as the guy that walked out on your mom and left you to fend for yourself. Well, you got along just fine for most of your life without me in it, and that's the way you want to leave it. Ok.

Sonny: Not anymore.

Sonny: I've been watching Jason struggle with his father's death.

Mike: Yeah. No one expected to lose Alan like that. I mean, it came out of the clear blue.

Sonny: And it doesn't make it any easier for Jason, you know. He was never able to connect with his father. Never had a chance. And it got me thinking that if I was ever in that position, you know, all those years of wasted anger and resentment, it just doesn't . . .

Mike: Well, wait. What are you saying?

Sonny: I don't want to have any regrets. I just would like to put the past behind us.

Mike: Oh, come on, Michael. We've tried. I mean, we've tried millions of different ways. I mean, it never seems to last.

Sonny: That's not your fault, it's my fault. I have a hard time forgiving people. Family's important to me.

Mike: Thank you, Michael.

Sonny: It's not going to be easy. But you know, it’s just like I said, family's important.

(Sonny tells Mike he's important to him. 3/26/07)

I love Sonny and Mike scenes. But they are so rare and there is no follow up regarding their scenes. Mike should have really been involved in Sonny's Bipolar storyline. They could even do that now, with Mike asking Sonny how he's feeling or about his medication and therapy.

January 3, 2007

Sonny: I got to be honest with you, Mike. The police are better equipped to handle the search than I am.

Mike: All right, all right. I'm just worried about Spencer. I mean, the nanny had to have been planning this for months. Now, you know she's well hidden, Michael.

Sonny: You got to give Nikolas a chance.

Mike: All right. I just want to feel like I'm doing something.

Sonny: Do you need money? Do you need manpower? You need any kind of leverage, all you got to do is ask me.

(Mike arrives at Sonny's new coffee shop. He's introduced to Sonny's new attorney, Diane Miller. Then tells Sonny about his nephew Spencer being kidnapped. 1/3/07)

I was surprised Sonny and Mike got a scene so early in the year. I'm glad Mike told Sonny about Spencer. I think the writers should have Sonny more concerned about his own nephew being kidnapped, but glad he offered Mike the help. I'm hoping for some more Sonny and Mike scenes soon.
