Sonny asks Mike for a Favor
General Hospital. March 2, 2000. Mike goes to Sonny’s Penthouse. They talk about the chances of Sonny getting custody of his child. Sonny’s tells Mike that his chances are slim if his history of child abuse gets brought up in court. Later, Mike talks to Tammy about it.
(Mike walks into Sonny’s Penthouse with a box of pastries, as Sonny looks over some legal papers).
Sonny: What's this?
Mike: What does it look like, a time bomb? It's lemon danish from Aquista's.
Sonny: Too sweet.
Mike: Oh, since when?
Sonny: A while.
Mike: Well then, pass it on to the guys.
Sonny: What guys?
Mike: "What guys?" Johnny, Francis. Look, could we start this all over again? Good morning. Have you had any breakfast yet?
Sonny: It's not a good time, Mike.
Mike: Yeah, I can see that. What now?
Sonny: The restraining order Edward got.
Sonny: I have to stay fifty feet away from Carly. They got Carly so spooked that she'll lose custody of Michael and my kid's going to be a hostage in that house. Now, it's going to come down to a court fight. According to Alexis, there's no way around it.
Mike: All right, so you fight. I mean, if you're still determined to go. Just go to court and you'll win.
Sonny: I win, just like that?
Mike: Yeah. You're a successful businessman. I mean, you give generously to charitable causes. There's no way that they can prove that you've ever crossed over the line.
Sonny: So instead, they'll say I’m damaged. (Sonny walks away from Mike)
Sonny: The Quartermaines will hire detectives to snake out whatever they can.
Mike: Well, let them snake. There's nothing on the record. (Mike’s confused at why Sonny’s so worried).
Sonny: People talk. They love to. Especially about the past. You can't shut them up.
Mike: What people?
Sonny: From the old neighborhood. Neighbors, other kids. What . . . what if . . . what if they bring up Deke, you know? What if . . . or suspect? It'll come out, Mike.
Mike: Oh, my God. (Mike takes a heavy sigh and puts his hands to his face. Sonny walks away again and sits down). This is what this is about? Look, don't you think that if anybody thought Deke was violent, they would have alerted the police?
Sonny: Deke was the police.
Mike: But why is all this coming up now?
Sonny: There's a study that shows that . . . that kids who were abused grow up to beat their kids.
Mike: Nobody who ever knows you would think that you would ever hurt a child.
Sonny: Yeah, but the judge doesn't know me. That's what I’m trying to say, Mike.
Mike: Yeah, but I can't conceive of a . . . (Mike stops talking, walks over and sits down next to Sonny) Sonny, you were a brave little soldier. You never even let me know what Deke did. Now, they can't hold your childhood against you because nobody knew what was going on.
Sonny: ell, now you know. And Luke. But the problem is so does Taggert.
Mike: You don't think that Taggert takes that seriously. He's cracked Deke up to be some kind of saint.
Sonny: What better way to avenge Deke's death than to prove that I’m dangerous to my own kid? If this Deke stuff gets brought into court, I have to stop them. I need your help.
Mike: Okay. (softly)
Sonny: If Taggert dips into this childhood stuff, it's going to be his word against mine. Luke will back me up, "it never happened." I need the same from you.
Mike: You mean lie?
Sonny: Well, um . . . forget.
Mike: I just wish you had come to me or a teacher or a priest or a friend. You have to know that I would have made this right.
Sonny: Make it right now, Mike. Back me up in court.
Mike: Whatever you want me to say.
Sonny: I appreciate that. I really do.
Mike: Okay. (Sonny reaches out and shakes his hand).
(Next scene. Tammy finds Mike standing at the docks).
Tammy: Hey. Don't you think it's a little cold out here to go stowing away on a freighter? Besides, you'd be sorely missed.
Mike: I’m not so sure of that.
Tammy: I am. I guess I don't have to ask you what's bothering you.
Mike: I took danish to Sonny this morning.
Tammy: Oh. Well, that was nice.
Mike: Yeah. It was like taking a water pistol to a four-alarm fire.
Tammy: Well, I guess Sonny isn't too happy lately, huh?
Mike: Sonny and happy don't often connect and I'm the reason for that.
Tammy: Don't you think you're being a little hard on yourself?
Mike: I wasn't there when he needed me.
Tammy: But you're here now.
Mike: Yeah. Yeah, and I’m still letting him down. Only this time he doesn't know it and this time he's actually thanking me for nailing a hole in his heart.
Tammy: So, what? You're worried about lying on the stand?
Mike: For Sonny, I'd incriminate a dozen nuns.
Tammy: Well, then, what's bothering you? Sonny came to you for help. I'd say that's progress.
Mike: Yeah, for me, sure. But for Sonny? I mean, look what I’m helping him do?
Tammy: You're helping him get his kid.
Mike: Yeah, in impossible circumstances and with a mother who's a curse from hell.
Tammy: Uh-uh. You never know how things are going to turn out.
Mike: Well, unfortunately, this time you do. I'm setting Sonny up for another heartbreak and another wound that won't mend.
