History of Mike Corbin

Mike Corbin is a man with a shadowy past. He is known for telling great stories, having a sense of humor, and playing the track. He is always ready to help friends in trouble at a moment's notice. Mike's real name is Michael Corinthos, Sr. He is half-Irish and half-Greek. His one wish is to reconcile with his son, Sonny Corinthos. Mike owns the Recovery Room, a bar located near General Hospital. Mike also owns a motorcycle shop with Jason Morgan. He lives in the apartment above Luke's Club. The following is the complete history of Mike Corbin on General Hospital and Port Charles.

Mike Corbin arrived in Port Charles on January 4, 1995. He’s introduced as a grifter who has never stayed in one place for very long. The first person Mike meets is Luke Spencer. He is looking for a job and has heard that Luke is opening a new club. Mike says he can do almost any job, including cook, bartend, and deal blackjack.

~-~-~-~

In a short period of time, Mike steals dinnerware, a side of beef from the Port Charles Grille, a rug to cover damage from a firebomb that delayed the opening, and Idle Rich speakers from a van in The Outback parking lot. He also suggests that Luke water down the drinks for the non-regulars.

~-~-~-~

When Luke asks for references, Mike gets a name off a box of matches on the bar, The Rusty Grille in Corning. Mike says he’s a good man to have in a pinch and wants the job. Luke and Lucky take an immediate liking to Mike and he’s hired.

~-~-~-~

Luke gets Mike a room at Kelly’s Diner. Mike lays on the charm with Ruby. She reminds him of Kim Novak. Mike meets Lily and Miguel in the hallway. He charms Lily with some Spanish. He tells her he learned the language by his ex-wife who was from Cuba. She made learning the language a pleasure.

~-~-~-~

Mike starts asking questions about Sonny Corinthos. He’s introduced to Stone at Luke’s Club. Sonny notices the Idle Rich logo on the speakers at Luke’s. He is furious and says they’re stolen. After Luke tells him what happened, Sonny tells Luke to "can the guys butt." Luke asks Mike about the speakers. Mike lies and Luke reminds him that he promised no funny stuff. Luke introduces Mike to "the baddest dude in Port Charles."

Luke: Mike Corbin, Sonny Corinthos.

Mike: Hi, kid.

Sonny: You’re Mike Corbin?

Luke: You two know each other?

Mike: Oh yeah. We go way back.

Sonny: He’s my father.

Sonny and Mike exchange some heated words. Sonny calls his father a no class con and angrily demands that Luke fire him NOW and get him OUT of his sight! He stalks out of the room. Mike turns to Luke and says he thinks Sonny’s taking this grudge thing too far. Mike sits down and tells Luke how he left Sonny and Adela when Sonny was a little boy. Luke tells Sonny he has a chance to ask Mike why he did what he did. Sonny is really shaken. He wants NOTHING to do with his father. He’d like to kill the bastard. They compromise and agree that Mike can stay. Luke wants to give him a chance. Sonny doesn’t give a damn what Luke does. He just wants Mike to stay out of his way. He warns Luke not to trust him because he’s as small as they get.

~-~-~-~

Mike is grateful for Luke’s help. Luke has done all he can. Mike’s on his own from now on about his son. Sonny goes to Kelly’s and sees Mike sitting and eating breakfast. He demands to know what Mike really wants. A loan? No, says Mike. He explains that he went to Bernie Langs funeral. They went to ‘Nam together. His friend had a stroke. They were the same age and he tells Sonny he feels he is running out of time and he doesn’t want to wait until it’s too late. He wanted to find his son. Sonny is so angry he can barely look at Mike. He warns him to keep out of his face.

~-~-~-~

Mike and Brenda meet for the first time at Luke’s Club. Mike comments that Sonny isn’t easy. He has just witnessed the tail end of an argument between Sonny and Brenda (about Mike). She wants Mike to explain Sonny to her. But, Mike says he can’t be of much help. Mike and Brenda hit it off immediately. He quizzes her with his own questions about his son. Sonny tells Brenda his father would always show up with presents. He made his mom laugh. Mike would stay for a week. They’d play music and dance. She’d wake up in the morning and he’d be gone with no good-byes, no exclamations. Sonny says that his mother never stopped loving Mike. He’d always come con her out of grocery money and split. Sonny thinks if Mike stayed his mother might still be alive.

~-~-~-~

Mike dates Amy Vining. Luke asks Mike how it’s going. Mike says not that well. She gets angry at him when he doesn't call at the time he says he will. He asks Luke for advice. Luke doesn’t have any. At Luke’s Club, Mike plays in a poker game with Joe Scully, Bobbie, Sonny, and Harry. He starts winning some hands. Luke knows Mike is cheating. Mike becomes the big winner and cashes out with $3000. Outside the room, Luke angrily tells Mike he knows what went down to not let it happen again or he's out of there. Mike plays innocent, but agrees.

~-~-~-~

Mike wants Sonny to give him a little slack. He just wants to make up for some lost time. Sonny explodes. There’s A LOT more than time that was lost. Mike doesn’t understand why Sonny is so angry. Sonny wants to be left alone, but Mike continues and they start pushing and shoving each other. Luke has to break them up. Sonny says Mike has to stay away from him or he’s fired. Mike asks Luke how long it will take to inspire a reaction from Sonny other than rage? Luke says as long as it takes. Brenda asks how well Mike knew Deke. Mike tells Brenda that he seemed like an okay guy. He looked and definitely acted like a cop, and he provided for his family. It was something Mike wasn’t able to do. Brenda confides to Mike. Deke beat both Adela and Sonny and it was pretty bad. Mike is completely stunned by the information. He never knew. Now he understands why Sonny has been so full of hate and anger. Sonny comes in and hears them talking. He goes into a full rage and is furious that Mike knows what happened. Mike tries to talk to him and makes the mistake of touching Sonny’s shoulder. Sonny yells, "DO NOT lay a hand on me!" Mike tries to discuss it and pleads with Sonny that he never knew what happened. Sonny says to forget the whole thing. It’s over and it doesn’t matter anymore. But, Mike says it does matter. The argument escalates and Sonny starts provoking Mike into hitting him. He says that’s what father’s are for (ouch). Mike doesn’t take the bait, but Brenda has to physically separate them. Sonny leaves, Mike is left speechless, and Brenda is in tears.

~-~-~-~

Mike tells Brenda he was not liked by Adela’s family. Adela’s parents ignored Mike and were removed with their grandson, Sonny. The Corinthos men are not known for their long time commitments. Mike’s own father drank himself into an early grave. Mike gives Brenda a picture of Sonny when he was five years old as a birthday present. Sonny confronts Mike. Mike’s sorry for the condition (it’s kinda crumpled). He had been carrying it in his wallet for a long time. Sonny says he’s surprised he kept it. He warns Mike to never, ever, try and use Brenda to get to him (Brenda adored the picture). Mike tells his son to get over it.

~-~-~-~

Luke wants to involve Mike in a scheme to take down Joe Scully. Sonny doesn’t want Mike involved. He says he can’t be trusted. Luke disagrees. Mike can’t stand Sonny’s wrath anymore. Mike tells Sonny he is a cold hearted, cold-blooded hood. He could have been so much more. It was good that Adela died young so she couldn’t see what happened to her son. Sonny has nothing but ice running through his veins. Sonny taunts that this is Mike’s way of saying goodbye again. Mike says he’s staying, but not because of Sonny. He is staying to help his friend Luke out. Sonny could go to hell.

~-~-~-~

Sonny says don't push it. The next morning Sonny wakes up to Mike cooking breakfast. He’s making a ranch hands special and offers some to Sonny. Sonny says he’ll fix his own breakfast. Sonny doesn’t like Mike’s coffee, his taste in music (Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture), or his lumpy cheese grits. They quarrel through breakfast and Mike says Sonny has a surly attitude. He wants to do something to help. Sonny, almost non-responsive, just shrugs. Mike heads upstairs. Later, Mike comes back down with some boxes. He says he'll take everything to Goodwill unless Sonny wants to get a storage bin. Sonny says he already has a storage place from when his mother died. Sonny had to pack all of her things and take care of everything. If Mike had shown up there would have been nothing for him to do, but he didn't show up. "What a surprise," Sonny says bitterly. Mike provokes Sonny into getting mad. Sonny gets up and attempts to walk away but Mike won't let him. Mike keeps taunting him until Sonny finally blows. You still don't trust me!" He stands up and walks out of the diner. "If that’s the way you want it I won't bother you again."

~-~-~-~

It's Brenda's birthday. Sonny is sitting by himself on the docks. Mike walks over to him and sits down. Sonny tells him to go away. Mike stays. Sonny starts talking and explains that there is no place to pay his respects for Brenda so he's where they began. Mike has sympathy for Sonny, but expresses his concerns for his son.

"You don't know how to grieve Michael, and it makes me afraid for you. When somebody dies, people come together and they cry and they're nice to each other and they comfort one another and then they go on. And that's the part that you don't get. The living part. I guess the injustice of having to go on with life when someone you loved can't makes you think that there's no justice at all. And that makes us all criminals. How long have you been here, Michael? An hour? Two? And what is that going to do? Is that going to turn into a week and then into a month with you locked in your room with your bottle of scotch and your memories? I know that you think all you want to do is give her her due, but that won't happen. It can't. That's what death means," explains Mike softly and with emotion.

Sonny is tearful and bitter. "You're like the world's cheapest musical instrument, you know that? You got one note, one key. It's okay. It's okay, you know. Get over it. Move past it. Well, I feel sorry for you. The man who could never find anything in his life that was too important to leave behind." Sonny stands up to leave, but Mike stops him.

"Why don't you cut the crap, Michael, huh? You're no slouch when it comes to leaving. You left Brenda, you left your business, you left your city, you left your friends, and you left me. And then when the regrets piled up too high and they got too heavy for you to lift, you tried to leave your own mind. But somehow, you brought yourself back from the edge of insanity and you started to rebuild, and that made me proud. And I know that makes you proud, too. But has there even been one morning that you have woke up happy? Now, why don't you give Brenda the gift that she'd really want? Let her go. And give yourself permission to live without her."

~-~-~-~

Mike arrives at Sonny's Penthouse. He realizes that Sonny has just spent time with someone, as there are desserts out on the table. Mike is thrilled and starts asking questions. He's glad Sonny is seeing someone. Sonny won't give him any information. As Mike leaves, he offers Sonny advice on women. A little while later, Mike is at Kelly's talking to Tammy. He tells her he's excited his son is dating. When he turns around he sees Hannah Scott for the first time. Mike's jaw drops open. He is stunned at her resemblance to Brenda. Mike talks to her heart to heart and explains Sonny's relationship with Brenda. Mike warns Hannah to stay away from Sonny.

~-~-~-~

Mike goes to see Sonny at Luke's Club. He confronts him about Hannah and Sonny gets agitated, saying it's none of his business. Mike is persistent and continues to explain his concerns about Hannah. Sonny gets angry and throws a glass across the room. Mike leaves Luke's.

~-~-~-~

Sonny couldn’t stay legitimate for long and goes back into the mob. Mike reads in the paper that Sonny has been arrested. Mike goes to Jason and demands the truth. What is going on with Sonny? Jason admits that Sonny took back his territory and he's in charge again. Mike is angry, upset and disappointed. Jason tells him he can't go back and Sonny is alone in the business. Mike tells Jason is he should have told Sonny to stay out of business. Mike says he wants to see his son.

~-~-~-~

Mike visits Sonny at the Penthouse. "Thank God, you're alive," he says. He read in the paper that "War had broken out at the docks and Moreno has disappeared." He asks Sonny if it's true. Sonny doesn't answer. Mike is upset. "What about the coffee business. You were doing so good? Why did you go back to this? You have so much to lose? Why?" Sonny still won't answer and Mike asks him if he thinks he's wearing a wire. Mike has crossed the line and Sonny throws a glass across the room. "I’m alive alright," Sonny seethes. "For how long?" counters Mike. "Can we not do this now!" yells Sonny. Mike asks about Hannah. "Stop it now, Mike!" orders Sonny. But, Mike continues. "I'm your father. I'm not going to stand by and watch you die. Do you think it's going to be different this time? You're putting yourself and the women involved with you directly in the line of fire and than you hate yourself because you can't get out of the way. There is no safe place for you Sonny," Mike yells. "What do you want me to do? Tell me! What should I do this time!" Sonny yells back. "Go back to the island and take Hannah with you," Mike suggests. Sonny's not surprised hearing that from Mike. Sonny says he's finished running. "God help you," Mike says as he walks out.

~-~-~-~

Mike is waiting at Sonny's Penthouse. He wants to apologize for what he said to Sonny. He's going to try and stay out of his business and he's glad Sonny is not alone anymore. Mike admits he's really worried about him. Sonny suggests that Mike should stop reading the newspaper. Mike turns serious and says with emotion. "I didn't mean to interfere. I don't want to lose you ever again." Sonny sighs. "First you want me to run then you want me to stay. Stop interfering with my life." Mike says he'll try, but he can't help it. Sonny says parents and children need to separate. Mike thinks they have it backwards. "I separated way too soon," he says with regret. "Now I can't get rid of you," adds Sonny. Mike looks at Sonny and says softly. "I'm afraid you're stuck with me."

~-~-~-~

Mike finds Sonny at General Hospital. Sonny tells him about Juan, Lily’s son. He came to Port Charles to find Sonny. He asked Sonny for a job, but he refused. Sonny thought he would be safer not being around him. But, Juan got into trouble anyway. Sonny feels it’s his fault. Mike tells Sonny not to make this about his own guilt. “There are things you just can’t control,” explains Mike. Sonny unexpectedly gives Mike a hug and thanks him for coming by. Mike is stunned by the gesture.

~-~-~-~

Mike hasn’t heard from Sonny in a while. He’s worried and knows Sonny is very upset about Juan. He goes to the Penthouse and finds Sonny looking disheveled. Mike assures him Juan is going to be okay, but Sonny continues to fret about Juan. Mike again tells him it’s not his fault and tells Sonny he looks at the world like a child sometimes. He punishes himself for things that are out of his control. Sonny says Juan thinks he’s his father. Sonny confides in Mike. He is angry that Mike stopped him from going to the car the night Lily and his child were killed. “I wanted to die with my wife and child,” says a distraught Sonny. Mike responds tearfully that he is not sorry that Sonny is alive.

~-~-~-~

Mike runs into Juan at Kelly’s. He is doing better now and Mike sits down and talks to him. He tells him a little bit about Sonny and how he walked out on him when he was a little kid. Mike assures Juan that Sonny doesn’t hate him. He just wants to protect him from getting hurt.

~-~-~-~

Mike visits Sonny at the PCPD jail. He asks him what he’s being charged with. Sonny explains how the FBI arrested him at the Port Charles Grill. Sonny asks Mike if they have contacted him yet. “No,” says Mike. “They must know I’m always the last one to have a clue about what's going on .” Sonny says that’s the exact reason he doesn’t let Mike butt into his affairs. Mike tells Sonny he knows he can’t be locked up in a cell and asks him what he’s going to do about it. Sonny gets annoyed and says he’s fine until someone makes him think about it.

~-~-~-~

Mike talks to Jason. Jason expresses concern about Sonny’s lack of discretion with Hannah. Jason lists all of the information that Sonny has revealed with her around the Penthouse. Jason says Sonny’s guard is down. Mike dismisses Jason’s concerns and thinks Hannah makes Sonny happy. Jason thinks she might make him dead.

~-~-~-~

Mike goes to Kelly’s diner and asks Tammy out to dinner. He charms her and says he never noticed the chili until Tammy took over. Mike wants to make a night of it, but Tammy has to take a rain check because she’s short handed. Mike says she has a standing invitation.

~-~-~-~

Mike has dinner with Sonny and Hannah at Kelly’s. Hannah and Mike promise to cook dinner for Sonny one night. Later, Jason and Carly find Mike outside of Kelly’s. He tells them he had a wonderful time at dinner with his son. He thinks Hannah is the best thing that's happened to Sonny in a long time.

~-~-~-~

Mike comes to the Penthouse looking for Jason. Sonny is acting angry and paranoid. Mike wants to know what’s going on. Sonny confides that Jason is questioning his authority and he doesn’t like Hannah. Mike’s glad to know that Sonny can be mad at someone else besides him. The tension of the room eases and Sonny admits that he can trust Mike. He can count on him. He also admits that he shouldn’t treat Mike the way he does.

~-~-~-~

Mike talks to Hannah at Kelly’s. He raves to her about how happy she has made Sonny. Mike explains that in order for Sonny to feel happy he has to feel safe and secure. Hannah says to stop talking like that, because she is not who anybody thinks she is. “If that’s the case,” says Mike, “then you need to tell the truth because Sonny will never forgive betrayal.”

~-~-~-~

A few days later, Mike sees Hannah at Kelly’s again and asks if she talked to Sonny yet. She lies and says she has indeed talked to Sonny about her secret. Mike goes to visit Sonny. He tells him that Hannah is upset and not to hold her secrets against her. Mike says Hannah loves him and he doesn’t want Sonny to lose her. Sonny responds by saying he will make sure Hannah gets everything she deserves. Hannah is moving into the Penthouse.

~-~-~-~

Mike cooks dinner for Sonny and Hannah. He confides to Hannah that with Sonny there is only one real issue. TRUST. He tells her about the wire incident with Brenda. That Brenda thought she was doing it out of love, but the reasons didn’t matter to Sonny. Sonny comes into the room and they eat dinner. Afterwards, Mike makes a toast. He tells Hannah that he’s grateful for what she’s done for Sonny and that Mike now feels welcome in his house.

~-~-~-~

Mike finds Hannah on the docks. She finally tells Mike she’s an FBI agent. Mike gets very angry. Hannah tells him that Sonny has known for a long time and has just kicked her out of the Penthouse. Mike can’t believe Sonny has pretended everything was okay. Mike says Hannah made fools out of everyone and is furious. “I don't want to hear it! I don't. Do you know how hard it was for Sonny to trust you? How difficult it was for him to let his guard down and relax? For the first time in years, I saw something in my son that I could almost identify as happiness. If you can't be honest with him, at least be honest with yourself. You betrayed my son.”

~-~-~-~

Mike goes to the Penthouse and confronts Sonny about what happened with Hannah. Sonny admits he knew for a while. Mike is very concerned that Sonny is not really reacting to any of this. Mike says he’s sorry that it happened. Sonny says Hannah was a FBI agent doing her job. Period.

~-~-~-~

Mike gets a lucrative business proposal from Jax, Alexis, Ned, and Chloe. They will pay him $100,000 if he gets Gertrude Morgan caught up in a whirlwind romance, gets her to accept a marriage proposal, and then get her name on a marriage license. Mike wants to know why it’s so important to get Gertrude married. Ned says that she is laying false claim to his wife's company and this is the only way to take her out of the running. Mike asks what Gertrude is like. Ned says she’s a live wire. Mike thinks that if anybody would pay him $100,000 to marry someone, they are probably not the kind of person that he would even have coffee with, so thanks and good luck. But, he finally agrees after some coaxing from the group.

~-~-~-~

Mike has agreed to take Gertrude out on the town for New Year’s Eve. But he is reluctant, because he had to break his date with Tammy. Mike and Gertrude make small talk at their dinner table at the Port Charles Grill. After a few minutes, Sonny walks over. Mike gets a worried look on his face. Gertrude asks him if he’s all right. Sonny, sensing Mike’s anxiety, teases him by sitting down at the table and introducing himself by saying he always has time for dear old Dad. Mike continues to squirm during the conversation. Gertrude asks Sonny if he’s in real estate development like his Dad. Sonny continues to be amused, but then finally leaves them alone for their dinner.

Later, Mike goes to see Tammy after he abruptly ends his dinner with Gertrude. It is close to midnight and Mike tries to explain to her why he broke their date. It was business not personal. Tammy is really angry and doesn’t like to be treated that way. But, she does agree to give Mike a second chance.

~-~-~-~

Mike runs into Gertrude in the park. Tammy walks by and Mike realizes he doesn't want this job anymore. Gertrude invites Mike to an ELQ party with her. Mike says no and she calls him a horrible little man and says she never wants to see him again. Mike grins and goes after Tammy.

~-~-~-~

Mike tells Ned he wants out of the plan to marry Gertrude. He would rather have a relationship with Tammy. Ned’s angry, but Chloe thinks it's great that Mike would set aside profit for love. Mike says it's not exactly love, but he’d like a chance to find out what it is. Ned wants his money back. Mike agrees saying “It's all here, minus the cost of the suits, which you ordered me to buy. And look, if it's any consolation, this wouldn't work past tomorrow night anyway. Gertrude invited me to a Quartermaine party and the second that Edward or A.J. laid an eye on me, it would've been over.”

 ~-~-~-~

Mike talks to Tammy. He tells her he’s done with Gertrude. He tells Tammy it means no big nights on the town or lavish dinners at the Port Charles Grill for a while. He hopes Tammy likes walks in the park, hot dogs, and the zoo. Tammy says those are her three favorite things.

~-~-~-~

Mike comes over to ask Sonny where Jason is. Sonny tells him he's gone and that Jason ripped up the note that said how much Mike owed him. Mike asks for a cell phone number or something so that he can smooth things over for Sonny and Jason. Sonny keeps telling him it's not like that and there’s nothing Mike can do about it.

~-~-~-~

Mike overhears at Kelly’s that Carly is pregnant with Sonny’s child. He talks to Sonny face to face and it is confirmed. Sonny explains that the dark side took over and he doesn’t know what happened, but he will be the best father he can. Mike talks to Tammy about the news. He’s shaken up because he doesn’t know how well Sonny can handle this. He tells Tammy that Sonny has a huge investment in this child. If any thing happens he’s going to make it his fault. Mike taught him to walk away. Deke taught him to handle problems by breaking things. He’s worried Sonny’s going to set impossible standards for himself.

~-~-~-~

Mike brings some pastry over to the Penthouse. Sonny says it will come down to a court fight to get his child. Sonny’s tells Mike that his chances are slim if his history of child abuse gets brought up in court. If the topic comes up, he wants Mike to deny it ever happened.

Mike: You mean lie?

 Sonny: Well, um . . . forget.

Mike: I just wish you had come to me or a teacher or a priest or a friend. You have to know that I would have made this right.

Sonny: Make it right now, Mike. Back me up in court.

Mike: Whatever you want me to say.

Sonny: I appreciate that. I really do.

Mike: Okay. (Sonny reaches out and shakes his hand).

~-~-~-~

Sonny arrives at Kelly’s and tells Mike that Carly and him are now living together. He explains that they need to learn how to get along. “My kids going to have a happy home with a full time father,” declares Sonny. Mike has his concerns and tells Sonny to take care of himself. “That what I’m doing Mike,” says Sonny.

~-~-~-~

Mike comes over to the Penthouse with a rocking chair. It’s a gift for Carly. He asks how the living arrangement is working out. Carly says Sonny doesn’t trust her because she did a stupid thing and went in his desk. Sonny thinks she’s loyal to Jason, but not him. Later, Mike defends Carly to Sonny and thinks he is being overly sensitive. He explains there’s a big difference between going through a desk and being an FBI agent.

~-~-~-~

It’s Sonny’s birthday and Mike arrives at the Penthouse with a present for him. Sonny starts to shut down. He hates his birthday because of the horrible memories of what Deke did to him. Mike feels guilty because he thinks it’s about all of the birthdays he forgot. He wants to put the past behind them. He coaxes a reluctant Sonny to open the present. It’s a picture frame for the baby. Sonny says thanks. Mike asks if they’ll ever get past all of this anger. “I mean, I was not around for most of your birthdays and the ones that I did show up for I never had a present. I have one now and it really isn't much, but it's about your kid because, you see, I plan on being a hell of a lot better grandfather than I ever was a father to you. If you’ll let me.”

~-~-~-~

Mike is shocked to see Lucky on the docks. He’s here to see his sister and brother. Mike says he should at least talk to Elizabeth. Lucky says no. He can’t go back to the way it was. Lucky makes Mike promise that he won’t tell any one he’s back in Port Charles or he’ll split. Mike reluctantly agrees not to tell anyone.

~-~-~-~

Sonny and Carly have lost their baby. Mike is angry and upset. He confronts both AJ and Carly in anger. Then, he talks to Sonny at the Penthouse. He’s sorry for the way he treated Carly. Sonny says she just lost her baby and is very fragile. Mike had no right to treat her that way. Mike reminds Sonny that he lost a child too and he is very worried about him. He knows how Sonny handles things. He shuts everybody out of his life. Mike wants to help. Sonny says he can help by telling him how to comfort Carly. She is devastated. Mike suggests that being there for Carly is the best way that Sonny can help her right now. Sonny thanks him for his advise. As Mike starts to leave, Sonny stops him and says with sincerity. “Mike. You would have made a great grandfather.”

~-~-~-~

Mike sits at the docks. He is upset that Sonny and Carly lost the baby. He knows that Sonny really wanted a child and hates to see Sonny in so much pain. Tammy comforts Mike and tells him he is not alone.

~-~-~-~

Mike comes over to the Penthouse. He wants to borrow some cufflinks from Sonny. Sonny tells Mike that he and Carly are going to the Nurse’s Ball too. Mike is surprised, but Sonny explains it’s the first thing Carly has shown interest in since the baby died. Mike asks how Carly is doing. Sonny admits he doesn’t know how to help her. She is having a hard time. Carly comes back from shopping and Mike apologizes for how he has been treating her.

~-~-~-~

Mike goes to the Penthouse. Sonny’s in a bad mood because Carly and Michael have moved out. Mike tells Sonny he misses Carly. He also tells Sonny that he wants to start back room gambling at Luke’s Club. Sonny tells him he will have to pay protection like any one else and Sonny won’t help him get out of trouble. Mike says nothing will happen.

~-~-~-~

Sorel tells Sonny about Mike’s gambling debts. Sonny arranges a meeting to straighten it all out. Carly tips the police about the meeting because she thinks Mike will be there, not Sonny. She goes to the motel room and hides in a closet with a tape recorder. Sonny shows up and Sorel tries to blackmail him to ship some drugs. Before he can answer, Carly comes out of the closet so Sonny won’t incriminate himself. Then the cops arrest him.

~-~-~-~

Sonny confronts Mike and is furious that he put Carly in a position that she had to lie to him. “You knew how Carly operates, but her safety wasn’t a concern to you. The lying, the gambling, I HATE that! But putting Carly’s life in danger, I cannot forgive.” Mike realizes how much Sonny loves Carly.

~-~-~-~

Mike brings Sonny and Carly a wedding gift. Carly asks him where the $40,000 went. Mike says he gave it back to Sonny. Carly explains to Mike that the whole thing backfired and Sonny wouldn’t talk to her for weeks. Mike tells Carly how Sonny expresses so much worry about her. He gives them a silver bowl.

Sonny arrives at the Penthouse. He has just found out from Benny that Mike just borrowed $10,000 more dollars from one of their loan sharks. Carly shows him the gift. Sonny wants to talk to Mike alone. He confronts Mike about his gambling. They get in a very heated argument and a lot of old wounds boil to the surface. They say some really mean things to each other. Sonny throws the bowl off the table and tells Mike to take it and pawn it. Sonny tearfully talks about his mother and all the heartbreak Mike caused her. He calls Mike a coward. Mike fights back with all of the bad things Sonny has done to people. Sonny yells for Mike to get out. They fight some more and Mike hits Sonny across the face. Carly runs over and throws Mike out of the house. Sonny shuts down.

~-~-~-~

Tammy comes to the Penthouse and tells Sonny that Mike is missing. She wants to know what happened between them. Sonny tells them he fought with his father. Tammy thinks more happened. Sonny dismisses that and says Mike always finds a reason to leave. Tammy says she loves Mike. She also says that Sonny is the center of Mike’s life.

~-~-~-~

Mike comes out of hiding and finds Carly. She hugs Mike and asks where he’s been. Mike doesn’t answer her. She tells him that Sonny wouldn’t turn him away, but Mike doesn’t believe that. Mike leaves and Carly follows him. He’s living down on Courtland Street.

~-~-~-~

Carly finds Mike on Courtland Street. He’s playing some poker at a bar. She refuses to give him any more money. Two men follow her out. They know she is Mrs. Corinthos. They grab her and tell her they have a message from Sorel. Mike tries to protect her, but he’s attacked too and gets beaten up. Sonny’s car drives up and Mike and Carly are saved.

~-~-~-~

Sonny is at the park with Michael. Mike comes out from the bushes. Mike apologizes for hitting Sonny. He says the one thing he could always say was that he never laid a hand on Sonny. Now that’s not true anymore. He says he loves Sonny and even if he doesn’t believe it, it’s true. Mike walks away. Sonny says he didn’t think he’d come back. Mike stops walking, knowing that is Sonny’s way of letting Mike back into his life. Mike says it’s World AIDS day and he was going to light a candle for Stone. Sonny says he already lit one. Mike asks if he could stop by and see Michael sometime. Sonny says that Michael would like that.

~-~-~-~

Sonny is in the hospital after being gunned down at the PCPD. Mike comes by to visit. Mike says Sonny gave everyone a scare. He tells Sonny to be careful. Mike starts to leave, but Sonny calls after him. He thanks Mike for coming. Mike is thankful Sonny is alive.

~-~-~-~

Mike comes over and wants to cook dinner for Sonny’s birthday. Sonny confides that Carly wants to have a baby, but he doesn’t want to. Mike tells Sonny that he doesn’t think he’s afraid at all, but that he doesn’t think he deserves to be a father. Mike tells him that he was a terrible father, but Sonny would be a good one because he has always wanted a family. He says that Sonny has always been able to take care of himself and that’s why he could raise a child. Sonny says it’s not meant to be.

~-~-~-~

Mike: I know I haven’t said this in a long time. But, I’m sorry. I’m sorry that I wasn’t there for you. And I’m sorry that I didn’t do my job.

Sonny: I get that, Mike.

~-~-~-~

Mike comes over when he finds out Sonny spent the night in jail. He’s concerned about him. Sonny looks terrible. He starts rambling about his mother. Mike wants to know what happened and where is this coming from. Sonny wants to know how you betray someone that loves you. Mike asked if he wants to know how he betrayed his mother. Mike says he didn’t think he was. He loved her enough to let her go. He left to set her free because he couldn’t give her the things she deserved. So he let go. “It’s never clear or thought out. You do one thing and you call it something else. Betraying someone doesn’t mean that you don’t love them. Or they don’t love you. Or that everything is lost.”

~-~-~-~

Mike arrives at Sonny's warehouse with a bag of takeout food. He sits down and tells Sonny he can't sleep and he figured Sonny couldn't either, so he thought he'd stop by. He tells Sonny that he's done things that Sonny wouldn't understand. Sonny immediately states he doesn't want to talk about his childhood anymore and Mike assures him it's not about that. He’s never able to finish what he wanted to tell Sonny. When Mike is leaving, he asks Sonny if he thinks they will ever find out who murdered Sorel. Sonny's answer: I hope not.

~-~-~-~

Mac Scorpio has all of the suspects of Joseph Sorel gathered in a large room. There's a lot of bickering among everyone and Carly is accused of pulling the plug on Sorel. All of the sudden Mike defends Carly and says she didn't do anything wrong. Sonny takes Mike aside and tells him to talk to an attorney (Alexis) before he says another word. Mike says he doesn't need an attorney, he is confessing. Mike explains to Mac that he wanted to protect his son and Carly from Joseph Sorel. He saw Carly in the hospital the night he burned his hand. She told him that Sorel wanted to hurt her and Michael. Mike turns to Sonny and says that he let him down so many times before and he didn't want it to happen again. Mike tells Mac he went to the ICU, the cop was asleep, no one was around, so he smothered Sorel with a pillow. Angel interrupts and says that's not what killed her father. Mac listens to her story than summarizes the confessions. Mac explains that Sorel was already dead before Carly, Mike, or Angel intervened. Sorel's respirator was turned off. When they find out who did that, they will find out who is guilty.

~-~-~-~

Mike is at Carly's house and he doesn't understand why she won't move back into the Penthouse with Sonny. He tells her that Sonny is giving her a second chance and this is as close to forgiveness that she will ever get with him. Carly doesn't want to, but Mike again explains that Sonny is trying, in his own way, to get past her betrayal. Then Mike confides to Carly that he has done a lot of things that he has never told Sonny and probably never will, because he is too afraid that he will lose him. Carly asks what kind of things, but Mike won't tell her. He tells Carly that once you screw up with Sonny he redraws the boundaries in the relationship and it could take years to get that back.

~-~-~-~

Mike recognizes Janine Matthews at Luke's Club. It is clear they know each other quite well and aren't on very good speaking terms. Mike wants to know what she's doing in town. She says it's personal and not to worry, because it doesn't involve him. Mike says there are no roulette wheels in Port Charles, so it couldn't be too personal. Janine counters back and then comments that Mike hasn't asked about her kid. Mike asks her about Courtney. Janine says she is fine now that Mike isn't around. Mike gets defensive and says that the "gambling thing had a grip on him so tight . . . "  Janine interrupts him and says she doesn't want to hear any of his excuses, because she has heard all of them before.

~-~-~-~

Mike is at the Penthouse and is cooking Thanksgiving dinner. When Sonny arrives he teases Mike a little bit and then asks him to stay, since he already messed up his kitchen. Mike doesn't resist the invitation too hard. Sonny pours them drinks. Mike goes into an explanation about families and Sonny cuts him off. Sonny tells Mike he can't forgive. It's just not in him.

~-~-~-~

Mike visits Carly at her cottage. She asks him to help her find Sonny in Puerto Rico. Mike says he doesn't know where he is and if Sonny wanted him to know he would have told him. Mike says that when Sonny's in Puerto Rico, he's on business. Carly doesn't know how Mike does it (dealing with Sonny's inability to forgive). Mike says he's to blame for how Sonny is because he left him when he was a kid. Mike adds that there are things that he has never told Sonny and it's too late now. "I could lose whatever I managed to build with him." Carly thinks it would be Sonny's loss.

Mike leaves Carly's cottage and A.J. is waiting for him outside. A.J. makes some threats about Janine. Mike brushes him off, so AJ promises to tell Sonny about Janine. Mike yells out angrily and warns A. J. to stay the hell away from Sonny and to keep Janine away from him too.

~-~-~-~

Mike comes rushing into Kelly's looking for Janine. It's a setup. A.J. was the one that called him. Mike tells him to leave him alone. A.J. says he is the solution to Mike's problem, which Mike obviously wants to keep from Sonny. A.J. has some business with Janine, but Sonny has her stashed somewhere. He wants Mike to find out where she is. Mike responds: "Here's the deal. Get lost." A.J. continues to harass Mike, when Carly and Zander intervene.

Carly asks Mike what's going on. He says something that could change things forever between him and Sonny. He asks for Carly's help. In the meantime, Sonny is in Puerto Rico, showing Alexis a night on the town. Hopefully, Mike will talk to him when he gets back.

~-~-~-~

Mike comes into Kelly's. He urgently asks Carly if she found Janine yet. Nope, she says. Mike needs to know when Sonny is coming back. Carly asks him what is going on with him and Janine. In the meantime, Zander calls Sonny in Puerto Rico and informs him that Carly and Mike are up to something.

~-~-~-~

Mike is at Jake's. He asks Zander to help him find Janine. He refuses. Carly walks in. She says Sonny is back in town. Mike asks if Sonny has talked to Janine yet. Carly doesn't think so, but she warns Mike to tell Sonny what's going on before he hears it from somebody else.

~-~-~-~

Janine shows up at Sonny’s Penthouse. Sonny finds out Courtney is her daughter. Mike storms into the Penthouse. Courtney looks shocked as she says, "Daddy?" She's Mike's daughter!

Courtney runs to Mike and hugs him. She is very confused and wants to know what happened to him. Mike tells Courtney he’s sorry. Janine interrupts and tells Courtney she was better off thinking her father was dead because he took all of their life savings. He gambled it all away because he only cared about himself. Janine had to get her daughter away from that. She tells Courtney she was only trying to protect her. Janine adds that Mike never even tried to find her. Courtney is crying and yells at her mother, still not understanding why she told her he died. Sonny says she should hear her mother out. Why? asks Courtney. Mike says that Sonny is her brother. Courtney looks at her mother and says she only came here to get money from Sonny Corinthos. Janine denies it, saying she didn’t even know Mike had a son. He neglected to tell her he had another family. Courtney thinks Mike didn’t think she was good enough. He was too busy being with his famous mobster son.

~-~-~-~

Mike asks if Sonny will help him find Courtney. Sonny angrily says it’s always someone else’s fault. Mike says he’s not asking Sonny for forgiveness, only his help. His sister needs him. This only makes Sonny angrier, but he does tell Johnny to have Zander track down Courtney.

~-~-~-~

Mike has a scene with Carly and Zander. He is angry and accuses Zander of setting him up. He's mad because Zander brought Courtney to Sonny instead of him. Zander defends himself and says he didn't know who Courtney was when he brought her to the Penthouse. Mike demands that Zander tell him where Courtney is. Zander refuses to help Mike because he doesn't want to betray Sonny.

~-~-~-~

Mike is waiting in the hallway of the Penthouse. He asks Courtney if they can talk. She agrees. Mike tries to explain why he never looked for her. It was the gambling. Courtney tells the story of how her Mom dragged her away from their home, told her Mike was dead, and how she cried every night. She says he has a lousy explanation. Mike said he felt he didn't deserve to have a family.

~-~-~-~

Sonny, Mike, and Courtney are at the Port Charles Grille. Mike thanks Sonny for inviting him, but Courtney admits she was the one that called him. Mike tells Sonny that he isn't running this time and if he doesn't like it, tough. Courtney returns and Mike wants to make a new start with his children. He tells them he isn’t sure why he did what he did, but he is going to make them a promise. They won’t regret trying to work things out tonight. Sonny is tuning out at this point and cannot even look at his father. Courtney is listening to every word.

Mike pulls out a picture of himself and Courtney when she was young. This sends Sonny completely over the edge and he bangs the table with his fist. Mike tells him not to do this. Sonny wants Courtney to leave with him, but she refuses. So, he gives her the condensed version of Mike’s story. “He didn’t mean to. It wasn’t his fault. And he always loved you. Is that enough? Do you feel better now?”

~-~-~-~

Mike visits Janine. He wants to help out with Courtney in some way. Janine hands him a tally of all the money he owes her. She says he can help by giving her something like $198,000. They argue for a while and Janine really lays into Mike. She doesn't want him to be around Courtney because he will hurt her. Mike wants a second chance with his daughter.

~-~-~-~

Mike walks in to the Penthouse as Sonny explodes with anger and knocks over some glasses. He wants to know what happened. Courtney asks if she can life with him. Mike agrees and Sonny gives him money for a nice place. Courtney leaves and Mike warns Sonny not to hurt his sister again.

~-~-~-~

Mike has a Hotel Suite for himself and Courtney. They try to set some ground rules. Courtney says she's not a kid and doesn't want to have to report to Mike about anything. Mike agrees. Mike tells Courtney not to be too hard on her brother, because he has a hard time with forgiveness. But, Mike wants to know if Courtney is different. Can she forgive her father? Courtney doesn't know yet. She needs some time

~-~-~-~

Courtney and Mike are at the Hotel. They sit down and start reminiscing about Courtney's childhood. They both remember the tea parties Courtney played and Mike buying her a real nice set. Janine knocks on the door. Courtney has invited her over. Janine and Mike fight for a few minutes, until Courtney gets upset and wants them to get along. They do for a few minutes. Sonny comes to the door. Courtney doesn't want him to come in, but Mike says it's okay. Sonny is angry at Mike for moving into the same hotel as AJ. Mike doesn't get the connection. Sonny explains that AJ is his enemy and is using Courtney. Everyone dismisses Sonny's concerns. Sonny wants Courtney to leave with him, but everyone tells Sonny he can't tell Courtney what to do. Courtney gets upset and storms out of the hotel. Sonny starts to go after her, but Mike tells him not to make Courtney feel like a prisoner.

~-~-~-~

Courtney has been involved in a car accident with Mike's car. Sonny rushes to the hospital. She is okay, just shaken up. Detective Taggert is grilling her about testing her blood alcohol level and leaving the scene of a crime. Sonny tells her she doesn't have to do anything. Courtney says she has nothing to hide. She goes to take the test.

Mike rushes into the ER. Sonny and him argue about Courtney. Sonny says that if Mike would have let him go after her, this never would have happened. Courtney pleads with them to stop fighting. She tested negative for the blood test, but she's charged with leaving the scene of a crime. She agrees to go down to the PCPD. Sonny and Mike go with her.

~-~-~-~

Sonny, Mike, Courtney, and Alexis are at the PCPD. Taggert is determined to blame Courtney for the accident and is trying to find a way to arrest her. He admits to Detective Garcia that he will do anything to get Sonny. In the meantime, Sonny is warning Courtney to stop talking. She refuses, saying she's innocent. A witness claims she saw Courtney run the red light (she's been paid by Nik to lie). It also turns out that Mike let his insurance run out. Sonny says if that's the case to arrest Mike. Sonny and Mike have a little argument and Sonny suggests Mike leaves. He does. Courtney is allowed to go home. Mike will receive a summons for the insurance and Courtney for running a red light.

~-~-~-~

Mike goes to Sonny’s Penthouse. He is frantically looking for Courtney. He is angry that Sonny let her go from the police station without going after her. She was just in a car accident and was upset. Mike can’t believe Sonny would shut down on his own sister. Alex interrupts and informs Mike that she was the one that told Sonny not to go after Courtney. Sonny says that since Mike is such a great father, he should tell him what to do. Mike Corbin on Port Charles (1997-98).

Mike asks Mary Scanlon to check out a bar with him. She arrives with her son Frank. At the bar, Mike haggles the owner to an agreeable price. Mike offers the apartment in back to intern Mark Harmon. Mike celebrates the opening of the Recovery Room with the Scanlons and interns from the hospital. He gives the first beer to Mary Brennan Scanlon. Mike tells Matt he used Mary’s phone number to place his bets at the track.

Mike starts joining the poker games at the Scanlon’s house. Which includes at various times, Frank, Joe, Mary, Matt, Julie, and Rhonda.

Mike and Matt start fixing up the apartment and making it wheelchair accessible. They are becoming good friends.

Mike asks Mary to go out to dinner with him. Their plans are ruined when a pair of cops come and arrest Mike for having stolen money. Mary says the money was hers, not Mike's. They arrest her too (there was marked money involved with Serena’s kidnapping).

A quiet Mike greets Mary. She wants to know what’s the matter. Is Mike mad because she got him arrested? No. Then why did he cancel their date? Is it because she found out that Sonny Corinthos is Mike’s son? He asks if that bothers her, considering Sonny's line of work. She says no. Mike says they're not going to give him a liquor license because they looked up his police record, which is some four pages long. Mary says she doesn't care about his rap sheet, he makes her laugh and she likes him, and that's a good enough reason in her book to let him serve beer. Mike and Mary consider his problem. He can't open without the license or he'll never make any money. Mary comes up with a practical idea and suggests that she could become Mike's partner, and she could get the liquor license. They agree, settling on a 99/1 split.

Matt talks to Mike about Dr. Boardman. He is requesting some special equipment to perform surgery. They are becoming close friends. Mike encourages him to fight for his rights. Ellen comes out of the boardroom to find Mike waiting. She tells Mike that they're waiting for a decision about Matt and the special equipment he’s requesting. Alan has good news. The board will implement the changes and get the standing chair from Atlanta. In a nice bow to history, Alan says, "as frustrated surgeon, my hat's off to you."

Mike has Thanksgiving at the Scanlon home. He puts some Brandy in with the gravy because he thinks it needs some zing. Mary doesn't want to zing the guests too much. Mike thanks Mary for inviting him. It's hard for him without Sonny, and he feels guilt and regret.

Mike visits Matt in the hospital. He brings him a bowl of vegetable soup. Matt might have pneumonia. Mike asks if Matt has everything worked out for when he gets out of the hospital. Matt is in trouble with the mob. Matt says he does. Mike tells him that he has friends who can help him and who won't ask any questions. Mike offers to help Matt lay low. He helps Matt and Grace hide in a warehouse. Mike gives them money, an address of a discrete boarding house, and the keys to a car out back in case they have to make a quick get-away. Later, after a shootout, Mike tells Matt he heard about his father coming to town. Matt admits it probably isn't over, but refuses to hide anymore. He tells Mike that his father said it was Chris who tipped him off to where Matt was. He adds that if Chris is dirty, he'll be very sorry he messed with him. Matt asks Mike to look into Chris background a bit more. Mike finds info about where Chris got $20,000, from Dr. Devlin. Matt says he won't let Chris get away with it and suggests that maybe it's time to talk to Garcia.
